Roe Ethridge
b. 1969
Born in Miami, photographer Roe Ethridge graduated with a BFA in photography from Atlanta College of Art. He currently lives and works in New York. From portraiture, to editorial photography, to still lifes and landscapes, Ethridge’s photography juxtaposes the banality of his subject matters with the hyperbolized, saturated filter of his colour palette; recontextualising ordinary objects through a kitsch, commercial-media filter. His disjointed narratives create subtly eerie compositions that subvert expectations; creating surreal and humorous photographs.
Ethridge has had global solo exhibitions at Greengrassi, London (2021 and 2015); Gagosian, New York (2021); Gagosian Gallery, Hong Kong (2019); Gladstone Gallery, Brussels (2018); Gagosian Gallery, San Francisco (2017); Foam Fotografiemuseum, Amsterdam (2016); Capitain Petzel, Berlin (2014); Campo Presti, Paris (2013); Rathole Gallery, Tokyo (2009); Scalo Galerie, Zurich, Switzerland (1997); amongst others. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Museum of Modern Art, New York, SFMoMA, San Francisco, S.M.A.K., Ghent, Tate Modern, London, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, among others.
