Ryan Gander

b. 1976

British artist Ryan Gander was born in Chester and currently lives and works in Suffolk. He studied at Manchester Metropolitan University, the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam and the Jan van Eyck Akademie in Maastricht. Gander has been a Professor of Visual Art at the University of Huddersfield and holds an honorary Doctor of the Arts at the Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Suffolk. In 2017 he was awarded an OBE for services to contemporary art. In 2019 he was awarded the Hodder Fellowship at Princeton University. In 2022, he was made RA for the category of Sculpture.

Gander has built an international reputation through a diverse range of work, spanning sculpture, apparel, writing, architecture, painting, typefaces, publications and performance. While often labeled a conceptual artist, Gander prefers to call himself a “neo-conceptual no-style-style amateur philosopher”. His work explores connections between the everyday and the obscure, the overlooked and the familiar, challenging language and perception.
