Beating away the January blues in Bethnal Green, Auto Italia hosted the opening of Alex Margo Arden’s solo show ‘Safety Curtain’ last Thursday. The exhibition, comprising sculptures, paintings, photography and installations, references artworks that have been the subject of recent political activism. Arden interrogates the retelling of histories using what she calls “evidence recovery.” Working from images found online of artwork vandalised through protest – from the Suffragettes to Extinction Rebellion – she embeds the damage into the fabric of the image.
Isabel MacCarthy captured the vibrant crowd, including Soft Opening’s Antonia Marsh and artists Rene Matić, Jenkin van Zyl and Lulu Bennett. Were you papped?
