Christelle Oyiri opened her new show on Friday at Gathering’s project space, Glasshouse. Her installation depicts a travel agency – one marred with the distrustful, dystopian hues, with toxic slime embroiling the space. ‘Venom Voyage’ explores militant marketing techniques and endlessly selling holidays, while highlighting the degradation of the French Caribbean through the use of artificial fertilisers (Oyiri is of Ivorian and Guadeloupean origin). A colonial story as old as time, driven by the relentless pursuit of profit. Aesthetically, Oyiri depicts a world washed with acidic toxicity and bright tones that scream danger, as if Thomas Cook met Dr. No and they popped a 2CB.
Working under the pseudonym Crystallmess, Oyiri is also a DJ and producer. She was recently selected to create the Tate’s inaugural Infinities Commission, set for release this April. We sent Colin Mullins to capture the buzzing crowd on Friday night. Were you snapped?
