Plaster Shoots: Queer East Festival

Queer East is a multidisciplinary arts festival, held across a range of venues in London. Colin Mullins photographed this year’s crowd

“Being queer is chaotic yet beautiful, challenging yet hopeful. In a world where the radical spirit of queerness is needed more than ever, Queer East Festival provides a platform for resistance to bloom.”

This is how Queer East Festival describes its mission. The event was originally established back in 2020 as a film festival in response to the lack of representation of queer Asian voices in the cultural sphere. Located across a range of venues in London including the BFI Southbank, ICA London, The Barbican and QUEERCIRCLE, this year it returned for its fifth iteration. Photographer Colin Mullins captured the scene at the opening of the show ‘{ guttural },,,{ fleshless }’ at QUEERCIRCLE, featuring works across writing, drawing, computer games, sculptural installation and painting.
