LIVE: Is this banana worth $1,000,000?

Interested in buying Maurizio Cattelan’s $1M banana? Try before you buy with our live stream experiment

In 2019, the Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan shocked the world when he exhibited a banana taped to a wall and called it art. The press called it “the most notorious banana in the world,” Cattelan called it Comedian. Some thought it was an outrage, others thought it was pretty funny. But Cattelan was the one laughing when Comedian later sold for $120,000.

On 20th November, Comedian will go on sale again at the prestigious Sotheby’s auction house. Given the notorious and controversial history of this artwork, it’s expected to sell for at least $1,000,000.

If you’ve got a spare mil in cash lying around, you might be interested. If you are, what will you actually get? We don’t like to state the obvious, but we have a few practical questions to ask on behalf of the new owner: namely, how long will your $1M banana actually last?

Using a near-identical replica, we set up a live streamed experiment at Plaster HQ to find out.
