Win £1000 in the Plaster One-Liner writing prize

Got big opinions about art?
Bored of 2,000-word exhibition reviews?
Want £1,000?

Then the Plaster One-Liner is the writing prize for you.

(Or maybe you’re just here because you’re following the cash… in which case, fair enough).

What is the Plaster One-Liner and why are we doing this?

This year, we’re collaborating with London Gallery Weekend (31st May-2nd June). We’ve created a competition that’s both fun and supports meaningful engagement with LGW exhibitions.

For this, we need you, the art fans. You don’t need to be a writer to enter the One-Liner – we want to encourage all London Gallery Weekend attendees to offer an honest opinion about what’s in front of them.

Why one line? It comes back to why we started Plaster: we were inspired by writing that hit hard and had a point of view. We’re the ‘magazine that doesn’t hurt your head’, a movement against the exclusionary language that often surrounds art. Frankly, we’re bored of reviews that confuse a lot and say very little. To us, smart doesn’t mean big words, long sentences and obscure references; it means instinctive, immediate and memorable. So for the One-Liner, we’re looking for creative punch, lots of opinions, humour (in the right places) and crucially, NO ARTSPEAK.

How to enter

It’s simple: visit any London Gallery Weekend exhibition between 31st May – 2nd June 2024, share a photo of the exhibition in an Instagram post and caption your picture with your one-sentence review of the show.

The winner, chosen by the Plaster editorial team, will receive a cash prize of £1,000. The winning review (and the full name of the winner) will be published on our website and Instagram alongside honourable mentions.

You’ll need to:

Deadline:

All entries need to be posted on Instagram by 6 pm on Monday 3rd June 2024.

Rules

Reviews must respond to works from galleries officially taking part in London Gallery Weekend. For the full list of galleries, see here.

You must visit the gallery and post your own photo (and yes, we can tell if you’re cheating). And remember: it’s about the quality of the writing, not the pic.

You can enter as many times as you like.

Technically, you could write a 100-word sentence with no punctuation… but don’t.

Make sure it’s a public post, we’ve got to be able to see it via @plastermagazine.

Not to state the obvious, but it needs to be your own work. No ripping off.

deadline

You must post your submission by 6 pm on Monday 3rd June 2024.
