Florian Krewer
b. 1986
Florian Krewer is a German artist born in Gerolstein. Krewer studied painting at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf where he was a master student of Peter Doig. He has lived and worked in New York since 2020. Krewer’s work takes the form of enigmatic, figurative paintings that explore masculinity and primitive desire. His ghostly portrayals of urbanism depict eerily hooded figures as they play positions of both submission and domination. Armed with a striking palette, Krewer’s work nods to the haunting legacies of Edvard Munch and Georg Baselitz.
He is currently represented by Michael Werner Gallery where he has taken part in a number of solo exhibitions, as well as recent solo shows at the Aspen Art Museum and the M WOODS Museum in China. He has work held in the Pinault Collection; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Musée des Beaux-Arts Montreal; Yageo Foundation Collection, Taiwan; Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris; Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Montreal. In 2022 he was the recipient of the Prix Jean-François Prat Award.
