Julia Adelgren
b. 1990
Julia Adelgren was born in 1990 in Stockholm, Sweden. She studied at the Bergen National Academy of Art from 2014 to 2016 before continuing her studies at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, graduating in 2020. She currently lives and works in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Inspired by the balance of effortlessness and tension in the scenes of John Cassavetes’ films, Adelgren describes her painting practice as slow and similar to the recording and editing process of a film. Adelgren’s scenes draw on the landscapes of Copenhagen and the whimsical essence of dreams. She infuses her allegorical landscapes with mythic motifs, inviting viewers into a familiar yet fantastical world, where nature takes on an otherworldly quality.
Her recent solo shows include ‘Roseate Nights’ at ADZ Gallery, Lisbon (2024); ‘Dragonfly Den’ (2022) and ‘The Watery Realm’ (2021) at MAMOTH, London; ‘Underworld’ at Abschluss Rundang Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, Germany (2021) and ‘Veins Blue’ at Galleri Bokboden, Bergen (2016).
