Julie Mehretu

b. 1970

Julie Mehretu was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and moved to the US in 1988. Best known for her large-scale multi-layered paintings of abstracted and gestural landscapes, Mehretu’s work combines elements of Futurism, Op Art, Constructivism, calligraphy and Abstract Expressionism to depict the effects of revolution and continual socio-political changes.

Her solo shows include LACMA, The Whitney, the Guggenheim, New York and the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art. In 2005, Mehretu was awarded the MacArthur Fellows Award. Mehretu was featured in Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People of 2020.
