Kudzanai-Violet Hwami

b. 1993

Kudzanai-Violet Hwami was born in Gutu, Zimbabwe and was raised in South Africa. Now based in London, Hwami sources the subjects for her paintings from her collection of personal photographs and found images. She was awarded a BA in Fine Art from Wimbledon College of Arts in London in 2016 and completed her Master of Fine Arts from the Ruskin School of Art at Oxford University in 2021.

Hwami’s solo exhibitions include: A Making of Ghosts, Victoria Miro, London, 2023; When You Need Letters for Your Skin, Victoria Miro, London, 2021; (15,952km) via Trans – Sahara Hwy N1, Gasworks, London, 2019. Group exhibitions: Kunsthaus Pasquart, Biel, 2022; I See You at Victoria Miro, London, 2020; If You Keep Going South You’ll Meet Yourself, Tyburn Gallery, London, 2016; We Made You Nations & Tribes, Corn Exchange, Manchester, 2013.

Hwami is represented by Victoria Miro Gallery. Her work is also held in the permanent collection of the Zeitz MOCAA museum, South Africa. In 2019, Hwami represented Zimbabwe at the Venice Biennale.
