Li Hei Di
b. 1997
Chinese painter Li Hei Di was born in Shenyang. She currently lives and works in London. Before earning her MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art, she received BAs from both the Chelsea College of Arts and the Maryland Institute College of Art. Her work explores her own experience navigating different aspects of repressed desire. Kaleidoscopic flurries of colour flood her canvasses and ethereal, amorphous figures swim beneath veils of paint. Multiple perspectives merge together in Hei Di’s work, creating dynamic compositions that offer manifold realities within a single painting.
Her work has been exhibited at Le Consortium, Dijon; Kohn Gallery, Los Angeles; X Museum Triennial, Beijing; Marguo, Paris; Green Family Art Foundation, Dallas; CICA Vancouver; Gagosian, Hong Kong and Pippy Houldsworth Gallery, London amongst others.
“The figures in my paintings are like ghosts, translucent beings, not solid humans. They are possibilities, not conclusions; they are forever in transition, but not in a hurry to become someone.” – Li Hei Di
