Penny Slinger

b. 1947

Born in London, Penny Slinger graduated from Chelsea College of Art 1969 and now lives and works in Los Angeles. Slinger’s multimedia artistic practice spans photography, collage, film and sculpture, exploring themes related to the feminine subconscious. Slinger’s art is influenced by European surrealism and has often been labelled as ‘feminist surrealism’ because of its woman centric narrative. Slinger’s photo collages are composed of unnerving, militant and sometimes humorous compositions that merge themes of the feminine subconscious with myths of the feminine mystique; creating works that mock traditional notions of femininity whilst celebrating female eroticism.

Slinger’s art has been exhibited widely including most recently at Tate Britain, London, (2023/24); Pace Gallery, New York, (2022); Sotheby’s S|2 Gallery, London, UK (2019); the Grand Palais, Paris, France (2018); Tate St. Ives, Cornwall, UK (2018 and 2009); Hamburger Kunsthalle, Germany (2015); Hayward Gallery, London, UK (2015); Blum and Poe Gallery, Tokyo, Japan (2015) and more.

Singer has also authored and illustrated numerous publications including 50% The Visible Woman (1969, 1971, and 2021); Sexual Secrets (1979) and Mountain Ecstasy (1978) among others.
