German artist Raphaela Simon was born in Born in Villingen, Germany. She studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich. She currently lives and works in Berlin.
Simon seeks to capture the ineffable on canvas. She is known for her paintings of inanimate objects and anonymous figures set against monochromatic backdrops. Her interests centre around the tension or “the hidden power beneath the surface.” She also creates fabric figures which, carefully staged, develop their own narration and a dialogue with the works on canvas.
Her solo exhibitions have been held worldwide at Fondazione Giuliani, Rome; Kunsthalle Düsseldorf; Galerie Max Hetzler, Berlin and Paris; Hannah Hoffman Gallery, Los Angeles; and Michael Werner Gallery, London.
