8 min read
In our new series, The Radar, we’re asking quick-fire questions to artists we’ve got our eye on. Our first round-up spotlights Garrett Davis, Bertie Garnett and Sohyun Han
Garrett Davis
American artist Garrett Davis collects random images, photographs, statues and cards to create experimental and surrealist prints. Made digitally with overlaid textures and photomanipulation before printing out and scanning, Davis’ work explores themes of memory, introspection, dreams and the subconscious.
Age: 21
Birthplace: Charleston, South Carolina, US
Last dream you had: My late sister visited me in my room at night, we spoke and I asked her questions. I don’t remember a lot, but I do remember the last thing I asked her: whether she was safe or okay. She nodded gently and after that, everything faded to black. I’m glad I don’t remember the rest. I think that was a sufficient ending to her story
Last thing you gossiped about: The lack of passion for wanting more in life and how labelling yourself as ‘not good’ can be damaging
Favourite art-world Instagram account: @kingsley_ifill
Favourite movie: Blue Velvet by David Lynch
Favourite album: Souvlaki by Slowdive
Favourite artwork: It changes, but as of right now it’s Family (2007) by Luboš Plný
Favourite exhibition you’ve seen: Not exactly an exhibition, but the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice. I saw my first Warhol there and fell in love with Voice of Space (La voix des airs) by René Magritte, which opened my eyes to a new idea of what art could be
Loves: My printers, alone time, ideas about the universe and existence, cold beaches, empty parking lots, pondering
Hates: The internet, planning ahead, parasites, feeling restricted when it comes to creating
