Megan Rooney
b. 1985
Based in London, artist Megan Rooney grew up between South Africa, Brazil and Canada. Rooney works with painting, sculpture, installation, poetry and performance. She completed her bachelor’s degree from the University of Toronto before graduating in 2011 from Goldsmiths College with a Masters in Fine Arts. For Rooney, colour and memory are immiscible; her large-scale, abstract, colour compositions are memory capsules. Rooney uses multimedia’s immersive nature as a way to create multi-sensorial encounters. Her art negotiates colour, shape and texture to capture the artist’s immediate experience. Meanwhile to the viewer, Rooney’s colourful abstractions appear as tempting suggestions of metaphysical scapes, such as a garden in bloom, a sunset sky, or a streak of smeared lipstick.
Rooney’s work has been exhibited worldwide including at Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge (2024); Institute of Contemporary Art Miami (2024); Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris (2022); the Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2018); the Venice Biennale (2017); the David Roberts Art Foundation, London (2017 and 2014) and the Fondation d’entreprise Galeries Lafayette, Paris (2014), among others.
