Pol Taburet

French artist Pol Taburet was born in 1997 in Paris, where he currently lives and works. He received his Bachelor’s and Graduate degree at École Nationale Supérieure d’Arts de Paris-Cergy. He won the first edition of the Reiffers Art Initiatives Prize for young talent and cultural diversity and has featured on the cover of Numéro art 10.

Taburet is best known for his striking figurative paintings that depict spirits and phantomic characters. His multilayered practice draws inspiration from Afro-Caribbean mythology and Guadeloupean oral culture, specifically tales transmitted by his mother, grandmother and aunts. His work also draws references to classical painting, popular culture and American trap music.

Taburet’s painterly style incorporates the use of airbrushing with traditional painting with acrylic colours. The result is a unique contrast of highly detailed textures and finishes. He often paints his figures as human-animal hybrids that inhabit starkly abstract backgrounds. Taburet says his subjects speak of life and death, and the passage from one to the other.

Recent solo shows include: Longlati Foundation, Shanghai (2024); Lafayette Anticipations, Paris (2023); C L E A R I N G, Los Angeles (2022); Balice Hertling, Paris (2020). His works are housed in the Pinault Collection, Paris and Venice.

“I want the work to be legible through a child’s eyes, for them to see something joyful and fun inside of it, and for adults to have a much more intense understanding of what’s being presented.” – Pol Taburet
