Richard Prince

b. 1949

American painter and photographer Richard Prince was born in the Panama Canal Zone, and currently lives and works in New York. Prince uses re-photography as part of his practice – a method centred around image appropriation. Since the late 1970s, Prince has used images from advertising, entertainment, mass media and American subcultures to redefine ideas surrounding identity, authorship and ownership. He is considered one of the most revered artists of his generation.

His piece Untitled (Cowboy), was the first re-photograph to be sold for more than $1 million at auction at Christie’s New York in 2005. Prince’s major solo exhibitions include the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (1992); San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, California (1993); Haus der Kunst / Süddeutsche Zeitung, Munich (1996); ‘4×4’, MAK Center for Art and Architecture, Vienna (2000); ‘American Dream, Collecting Richard Prince for 27 Years’, Rubell Family Collection, Miami (2004); ‘Prince/Picasso’, Picasso Museum, Spain (2012); ‘It’s a Free Concert’, Kunsthaus Bregenz, Austria (2014), and more.

Prince’s works are housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Texas; Museum of Fine Arts Collection, Boston; Museum of Modern Art, New York; and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
